RIFT connects to Cliniko with a single API key. Create the key in Cliniko, paste it into RIFT, and your practice's billing leak report runs from live data - appointments never invoiced, invoices still unpaid, and no-show or cancellation fees never raised. The connection is read-only: nothing in your Cliniko account is ever changed.
Before you start
- You need a Cliniko user account that is allowed to create API keys (practice owners and administrators can; ask yours if you are unsure).
- No installation is required on either side - the whole setup is creating a key and pasting it.
- New to RIFT? The first leak report is free and does not require creating an account.
Setup steps
Create an API key in Cliniko
In Cliniko, open My Info > Manage API keys and create a new key. Copy it - Cliniko only shows a key in full when it is created.
The key inherits your Cliniko permissions, and RIFT only ever reads with it. Treatment notes, letters and attachments are never requested.
Paste the key into RIFT
For a first free report: go to rift.rapidintelligence.com.au/try, choose Cliniko, and paste the key. The report runs on screen in minutes; for larger practices it is emailed when the analysis finishes. The key is used for that one pull and discarded - it is never stored.
For an ongoing connection: in RIFT, open Settings > Data source, choose Connect Cliniko, and paste the key. RIFT validates it with Cliniko immediately and confirms the connection.
Review your leak report
RIFT pulls the billing side of your account and builds the leak report. A connected clinic then stays current automatically: RIFT re-syncs from Cliniko daily, so an uninvoiced session surfaces in the week it happened rather than at the next audit.
What syncs
RIFT reads appointments, invoices and their line items, practitioners, and patient cases (where Cliniko keeps referrals, session limits, expiry dates and third-party payers). Clinical notes, treatment notes, letters and attachments are excluded outright - RIFT never requests them. The sync is strictly read-only: RIFT holds no permission path that writes to Cliniko.
Some honest edges of the Cliniko API worth knowing: individual payment records and Medicare or health-fund claim outcomes are not exposed by the API, so RIFT tracks an invoice as outstanding until Cliniko marks it paid. Draft invoices are also invisible to the API, so a session with only a draft invoice reads as uninvoiced. Full detail is in how the Cliniko connection works.
Disconnecting
Two ways, both immediate. In RIFT: Settings > Data source > Disconnect - daily syncs stop until a new key is added. Or in Cliniko: delete the API key under My Info > Manage API keys, which cuts off RIFT's access instantly, no conversation required.
Security and privacy
API keys are held encrypted and never appear in logs. Data is processed and hosted in Australia, and patient information never leaves the analysis pipeline. Details: Trust & Security, Privacy Policy and the data agreement.
